This rainbow is a beautiful storm that wraps around itself over and over again. The marble is about 2 inches in size and captures chaos suspended in glass. Using colored glass cane to create a rainbow spinning out of control yet giving a sense of peace as it dances around. A graphite mold is used on the surface of the marble to create a perfect finish.

A window into the ocean

The Anemone Windows Vase by John Gibbons is inspired by the patterns and movements of the ocean. It is an original work of art. The windows are optical and change with addition of light. 

It measures about 16.5" height and 8.75" width.

The pattern in this blown glass vase is achieved by cutting small glass rods and tiles, called murrine, arranging them in a pattern, and then fusing them together in a 2100 degree kiln. A blow pipe is then rolled along the edge of the glass to form a cylinder. The bottom of the cylinder is closed, which creates a bubble, allowing the glass to then be blown and shaped into the vase. Gibbons uses the optical properties of glass to create a magnifying-glass effect in which the pattern undulates when viewed.

This large marble measures about 2.5 inches and is inspired by tube sponges in the coral reef. The colors that form the tubes in the marble are created by layering rods of glass and then stretching the rods into another rod that is then cut into short sections called murrine. After the murrine are formed, I put the coral reef together and finish off the marble in a graphite mold to give it a perfect sphere shape.

yearning for those five shapely points

Hand sculpted glass starfish. This seductive sea star is created with a rich red color pattern on the bottom that gets magnified from a thick optical layer of clear glass on the top.

Choose between Flat and Creeping Styles. Flat starfish will rest on a flat surface with no legs bent over the side. Creeping starfish have two bent legs, capturing the moment when the starfish is creeping away, just like it clings to rocks in the ocean.

It is about 5" in diameter.

The vases measures about 13 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide. I am inspired by the patterns and movements of the ocean.  The ocean provides endless inspiration for shapes and colors and the gelatinous nature of glass lends itself to these jiggling creatures found in the tide pools here in Northern California.  

This vase is made up of small colorful pieces that I make called murrine.  Murrine are created by layering colored glass from the center outward. This layering of colors created a molten piece of glass about the size of a soup can that I stretch across the studio to create a 1/2 to 3/4 inch rod. We then put the rods in the annealing oven to cool over night. The next day we slice the rods onto 1/4 inch wafers that get laid out on a ceramic kiln shelf  into a mosaic like arrangement. The wafers are heated and fused together into a rectangular piece of glass. A blowpipe is then rolled along the edge and the flat sheet of glass turns into a cylinder. The bottom gets closed off and now there is a bubble of glass on the end of my blow pipe. Three layers of molten clear and gathered onto the bubble and it is blown and shaped with the help of my assistant into the vase pictured.

The “Red Kuri Pumpkin ” is a Japanese winter squash with a distinctive shape and a vibrant red skin. “Red Kuri” pumpkin has a sweet, nutty, and creamy golden flesh that is excellent for roasting. A true inspiration when creating in the glass studio . This forever pumpkin is measuring about 4 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall and topped with a perfect glass stem. This is a hand sculpted original "Starfish Cluster" by glass artist John Gibbons.

This piece measures about 11.5 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide. The base is a small clear glass bowl and the stars are fused to it while it is hot. This sculpture takes John and two skilled assistants working in unison to create.

This is a hand blown glass vessel with lid. The color is a deep opaque black with 23 karat gold leaf fused to the surface while the glass was hot. The vessel measures about 7 inches high by 4 inches wide with a snug fitting lid.

Hand sculpted glass starfish. This Sherbet Dichro Flat Starfish is created by adding a thin layer of Dichroic Glass to the bottom of the starfish, which is metallic and glitter-like. The Dichro gives the appearance of shimmering sand over a sherbet color pattern. Layers of coral, lime and amber colors are added to the bottom of the starfish, then a thick layer of clear glass is added to the top, making the starfish optical and appear almost wet.

Hand sculpted glass starfish. This Silver Aqua Dichro Creeping Starfish is created by adding a thin layer of Dichroic Glass to the bottom of the starfish, which is metallic and glitter-like. The Dichro gives the appearance of shimmering sand.

Sculpted glass mushrooms that represent fungus seen often in Humbolt county and created by John Gibbons of Eureka, California. These are vibrant variations of color and texture with a glass base that is made to capture the lush forest environment that mushrooms grow from. These art glass specimen are made to sit on a table or shelf. John has embraced the essence of a mushroom in nature while highlighting the properties of glass. The mushroom is made with the color pattern on the surface of the fungus creating an illusion of a freshly sprouted specimen.
