This hand blown glass vase was created by rolling colorful glass rods onto a bubble of molten glass. After making this vase it reminded of a circus tent, hence the name.

This Tide Pool Green Amber Anemone Bowl is a hand blown glass bowl by John Gibbons. It has alternating lines of tide pool green cane and amber murrine that twist around a clear glass bowl. The spiral converges at the center of the bowl, creating a vortex of color. 

It measures 13" diameter x 4" height.

This Starfish lighting fixture has a warm glow and three starfish clinging onto the piece. This piece is not wired to light up but can be used to create your own lighting project or it can be used as decor in the home.

Measures about 7 inches tall by 10 inches wide.

Inspired by ancient Grecian vessels that were discovered in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Each clinging starfish, is hand sculpted with a thick layer of clear glass applied over the color, making the starfish appear wet.

The Amber Tide Pool Vase by John Gibbons is inspired by the patterns and movements of the ocean. It is an original work of art. The anemone are optical and change with addition of light to create movement and undulation in the glass. Check out the video!

The pattern in this blown glass vase is achieved by cutting small glass rods and tiles, arranging them in a pattern, and then fusing them together in a 2100 degree kiln. A blow pipe is then rolled along the edge of the glass to form a cylinder. The bottom of the cylinder is closed, which creates a bubble, allowing the glass to then be blown and shaped into the vase. Gibbons uses the optical properties of glass to create a magnifying-glass effect in which the pattern undulates when viewed

The vase measures about 11.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide.

I am inspired by the patterns and movements of the ocean. This vase is made up of small colorful pieces that I make called murrine. Murrine are created by layering colored glass from the center outward. This layering of colors created a molten piece of glass about the size of a soup can that I stretch across the studio to create a 1/2 to 3/4 inch rod. We then put the rods in the annealing oven to cool over night. The next day we slice the rods onto 1/4 inch wafers that get laid out on a ceramic kiln shelf into a mosaic like arrangement. The wafers are heated and fused together into a rectangular piece of glass. A blowpipe is then rolled along the edge and the flat sheet of glass turns into a cylinder. The bottom gets closed off and now there is a bubble of glass on the end of my blow pipe. Three layers of molten clear and gathered onto the bubble and it is blown and shaped with the help of my assistant into the vase pictured.

A window into the ocean

The Anemone Windows Vase by John Gibbons is inspired by the patterns and movements of the ocean. It is an original work of art. The windows are optical and change with addition of light. 

It measures about 16.5" height and 8.75" width.

This 21 inch tall aqua vase was inspired by sunken vessels from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. For thousands of years ships have been crossing the sea on trade routes from Roam to Athens to Cairo. The vase has been adorned with starfish, seaweed and a bit of gold leaf.

Bluish green handmade glass starfish. Measures about 5 inches wide. This Aquamarine Starfish is created with an light blue and white color pattern on the bottom that gets magnified from the thick optical layer of clear glass on the top. 

Choose between flat and creeping styles. A flat starfish will lie flat on a table. For creeping, John lets the molten glass fall over the edge of a metal table, capturing the moment when the starfish is creeping away, just like it clings to rocks in the ocean. 

This sculpted glass sea turtle measures about 10 inches at its widest and about 14.25 inches tall. The shell and fins are made just like my starfish, with a thick layer of clear glass on top of a thin layer of organic colored glass on the bottom. I call this a barnacle back turtle, because of the 3-D barnacle like pieces of glass in the shell of the turtle. The base of the turtle is a very thick creating undulating and optical colors. I have been working with glass for 20 years and have fixated on ocean creatures for the past 10.

These are hand blown beautiful blue glass cups that I put into a mold to give a texture.

This large marble measures about 2.5 inches and is inspired by tube sponges in the coral reef. The colors that form the tubes in the marble are created by layering rods of glass and then stretching the rods into another rod that is then cut into short sections called murrine. After the murrine are formed, I put the coral reef together and finish off the marble in a graphite mold to give it a perfect sphere shape.

Hand sculpted glass starfish figurine with a red and white color pattern. It measures about 5 inches wide. This Classic Red starfish is created with a red color pattern on the bottom that gets magnified from a thick optical layer of clear glass on the top.

These hand-blown glass light pendants were created by rolling the clear molten glass through several colors of powdered glass. It is then blown into a bronze mold called a pineapple mold to give it the pattern of bubbles trapped in the glass. After it comes out of the mold another layer of molten clear glass is put on top of the bubble, and it is blown and shaped by hand with wet newspaper to become a perfectly shaped shade.

This beautiful pendant is about six inches in height and about six inches wide.

This bell measures 7.75" diameter and is 4.75" tall.

I experimented with a few bells, there is a hole at the top of this bell for the clapper/uvula to be attatched.

Glamorous Precious Phenomenon

The Coronado Sparkle glass starfish was hand sculpted from molten glass to resemble the sparkle of the waves lapping against the Coronado shores. Small bits of iron pyrite and mica are found in the sand in Coronado, creating a sparkle and shimmer in the sunlight.  I used pink dichroic glass to imitate this beautiful phenomenon.  An earthy tide pool blue is embedded into the glass behind the dichroic to resemble the salty water.

This vase is made by layering, a blue green glass on top of white glass and then putting the vase into a mold. The mold creates a diamond pattern on the vase and separates the colors, revealing the layer beneath. The clear lenses in the center of the diamond draw you into the depths of the vase. I call this color combination Darket Lagoon. This is a one of a kind piece that can be used for flowers, decoration or a gift.

Full of movement, this hand-sculpted glass turtle swims across a flat surface with its front fins bent upwards and back fins kicking. The turtle's shell is created with a thin layer of Dichroic Glass added to the bottom of the starfish, which is metallic and glitter-like. The Dichro gives the appearance of shimmering sand. The color is covered by a thick layer of clear glass, creating a wet appearance, as though it is underwater.
