This hand sculpted glass starfish was created by John Gibbons of Eureka California. This art glass starfish measures about 10 inches in diameter (from the longest two legs across).
I try to capture the essence of the starfish in a tide pool. The starfish is created with the color pattern on the bottom of the starfish that gets magnified from the thick layer of optical clear glass on the top, making the starfish almost look wet. The pattern on this particular star is called Murrine, an Italian glass technique where I take a glass cane (long rod of glass) and cut it in cross-sections to reveal a pattern that mimics the natural texture of the starfish in the wild. People have also said that it looks like barnacles on the starfish.
